5 ways to build remote workforce engagement and productivity

 |  16 March 2020

The practice of working for an extended period outside the office has been growing steadily in popularity, enabled by a suite of digital tools. As a cloud-based business, Re-Leased has embraced remote working since inception. As we see businesses take action around COVID-19, we have highlighted our tips which have made remote working a success for our company.

1. Over communicate

Communication is paramount in any professional setting, but it becomes even more important when your team is working remotely. You can’t pop down the hall for a quick chat or sit down face to face to work through a project. Even though you’re not there in person, encourage your team to remain collaborative. Utilising an instant message app, like Slack, can help with quick comms.

Another tip for keeping the lines of communication open is to set regular meetings. Have a daily team call - even if it’s only for 30 minutes, making sure the team feels like they’re still part of a team is important. Scheduling 1 on 1 meetings will also help to gauge progress on tasks and ensure anything that your team needs to communicate to you in confidence is being communicated.

Consistent communication with your team will be pivotal in maintaining the daily flow.

2. New to working remotely? Don’t forget to onboard the team

Without clear direction, a remote employee can feel stranded. What do they do next? Who can they turn to?

Make sure a remote employee knows what will help them succeed. What’s the best way of getting in contact with their team and manager? Email, text or another tool? When working from home, a routine is essential, be clear on setting expectations, especially when the team is required to meet online with clients.

3. Setting clear goals

Setting goals for the team is important to measure what is being accomplished. Whether working from home or not - it’s easy to get pulled in a million directions. Setting clear expectations for the week will make it easier for the team to prioritise their day to day.

4. Make sure you have the technology in place to facilitate ease of interaction

To be effective when working remotely, your team needs reliable tools and cloud technology. With communication being key, make sure you have a video conferencing tool, an instant message application, and access to any industry-specific software that your team will need to complete their day to day activities.

Regarding hardware, some team members may be used to working on two screens, leveraging a keyboard or mouse — make sure that they’re equipped with the technology they’re used to using, so their productivity doesn’t suffer.

Never fear — you can build app stacks quickly, efficiently and cost-effectively. They will fast-track your team for remote working while ensuring business continuity. Here are our recommendations.

5. Trust your team

Working remotely is not without its challenges, but if you’ve provided your team with the tools for doing so, the productivity will still be there. Remember, this is your team — you’ve trained them, you’ve mentored them; if you’ve done your job you shouldn’t have to worry about their productivity — but by aiding their productivity you will gain business efficiencies.
